To Be Seen A New Online Exhibition by Joel Hernandez

Im excited to share my latest body of work, To Be Seen. This collection of paper-mache sculptures is something deeply personal and reflective, inspired by the quiet power of Mexican Milagro charms, a sacred tokens of hope, protection, and healing. Traditionally, these charms are small and metal, shaped like body parts, animals, or symbols, but I wanted to bring that symbolism to life on a larger, more human scale. These sculptures dont just sit in the palm of your hand they fill a space, inviting reflection and contemplation.

The Story Behind the Eyes

Our eyes often give us away. They reveal what were feeling, even when we try to hide it. They hold our unspoken emotions and betray our truths when words fall short. This collection of handmade paper-mache eye sculptures reflects those raw, honest moments when a glance says more than we ever could.

Ive always been fascinated by how a simple gaze can carry so much weight. Whether its the feeling of being seen in a crowded room, or that silent connection you make with a stranger, these sculptures explore that tension between connection and solitude. By scaling up these traditionally small, Mexican folk art-inspired charms, I wanted to create something that brings hope and introspection into our daily

Behind the Artwork

Heres a glimpse into my studio, where these sculptures took shape. Each eye is more than just a visuals”its a story, an emotion, and a reflection of how we see and are seen. Whether you’re an art collector, someone who appreciates modern folk art, or just looking for something that resonates on a personal level, I hope these pieces connect with you.

If any of the work speaks to you, or if you’d like to reach out, I always love hearing how people connect with my art.
